A Society for people who study aspects of railways and a focal point for railway documentation
On 26th September 1965 a mass of Glasweigen's descended on Central station to enjoy a wild weekend away. Around midnight, eight specials with potentially around 5000 people on board, departed for an overnight journey to Blackpool. About 6 hours later at 05:45, 1X41, the first of these trains, approached Blackpool North station. During the next 70 minutes the other seven would arrive. A further train from Glasgow went to Morecambe and two more came to Blackpool from Aberdeen. I would imagine the Scots would initially seek out their Guest houses for a little kip before invading Blackpool's attractions. No doubt the local pubs and bars were well prepared for the demand as Blackpool had long been a favourite destination for the Scottish people. The infamous Glasgow Fairs weeks had always brought numerous trains to Blackpool from various destinations north of the border. Kilmarnock, Paisley, Johnstone, Coatbridge and Dundee were regular starting points for these trains. This particular day is perhaps a little more unusual in that it was a weekend trip, the trains returning on Monday 27th. September. When time permits I shall look at this study in more detail and this should create a full article.
